Up until a few years ago, this Berkeley restaurant was called The Original Mel's Diner (and other variations with "Mel's" in it). Then it became just "The Original." It's located at 2240 Shattuck Avenue (downtown on the corner of Kittredge) in Berkeley, California.
They have a rather extensive menu. I wasn't even able to fit the dessert menu (I know, the best part!) due to space consideration. But they have milkshakes, sundaes, floats, etc.
Restaurant hours are:
Sunday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m - 11:00 p.m.
Friday & Saturday, 8:00 a.m - 1:00 a.m.
I've eaten at this restaurant twice in the last couple of years. The first time, the food was undercooked and the service was horrendous. I decided to never go there again. Then, I had a friend who wanted a burger and I went along. Again, the food was terrible and so was the service. With all the other options in the area, I'm not sure why anyone eats here (other than it's one of the very few places in Berkeley open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday). And the prices aren't that good either. This Berkeley restaurant is really bad.
